What You Will – otherwise known as Twelfth Night, will be full of over 100 primary school students as a multitude of Olivias, Orsinos, Violas, Caesarios, the fulsome Sir Tobys, foppish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, the witty Marias and foolish Festes, as four schools take to the stage in Queen Margaret College Hall and another four in Kelburn Normal School Hall.
Busily rehearsing their scenes in their own schools, with Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) supplied mentoring from Mel Dodge, the students will meet up for the first time on the morning of their performance, do a full run and then perform to the public at lunchtime. Excitement is running high as they have fun with the Bard!
With this being the sixth year of SGCNZ’s Primarily Playing with Shakespeare (PPWS) programme, it is hardly surprising that the narrator is now an alumna of not only PPWS, but Maddie Brooks Gillespie also progressed through the various stages to become a member of SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company 2019, travelling to the Globe in London earlier this year.
This hour-long version of Twelfth Night has been edited to be family-friendly.
