The Wellington Art show - An Artist's impression

Helen Casey is a local Wellington Artist who just finished displaying her work at the Wellington Art Show. Was it worthwhile for her?

“It was a great show with thousands of visitors. I had several sales and felt it was a great success” - Helen Casey

About Helen Casey

Born on the island of Cyprus to Scottish parents, Helen spent her childhood in the wild Western Isles of Scotland, so New Zealand's Te Ika A Maui is the largest island on which to have made her home.

Helen says that growing up in Breaker Bay was amazing for a child obsessed with creatures of all kinds, from birds to bugs to fish, so Helen picked up a pencil and began drawing them. Dreaming of being an artist, she graduated from Wellington School of Design in 1992. After many years as an illustrator, Helen focused on being an artist. Her intricately detailed wildlife art is influenced by her time as a scientific illustrator at Te Papa and by her own traditional Celtic visual culture.

About the Wellington Art Show

Wellington Art Show is part of ‘Art Shows Across Aotearoa’, which also has shows throughout the year in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. It is a “premier art show experience set in the light, bright space of Pōneke’s amazing new Takina exhibition and convention centre.

”I was one of a diverse range of selected artists who curated our work ourselves. The public could immerse themselves in a range of dynamic and exciting art, meeting the artists and finding the piece right for them.” - Helen Casey

Artists pay for their space, and costs vary depending on how much room you take and what resources (Boards/Lights, etc.) you use in your display. Artists also pay a 25% commission to the event organisers for any art sold. Helen invested $700 to be at the show. She was happy with the weekend and her sales results.
