Building a business while becoming more Sustainable

Whether you are a small or big business it is time for us all to start applying sustainable practice and take responsibility for how we affect Wellington and the rest of our planet.

It’s no longer ‘trendy’ or cool to build sustainability in your business - it’s necessary!

The good news - you’ll find that a focus on sustainable practices will help you form long-lasting, personal relationships with your current and future customers. Consumers are changing, they are researching more and asking questions before they part with their hard-earned cash. They don’t just want to know about what you sell, they want to know all about your company.

Here some things that will help get you started.

  1. Donate to a sustainable cause. Support those working hard to help make the world a better place.

  2. Be very aware of who your suppliers are and if they are becoming sustainable. If not make a change.

  3. Use ZOOM or SKYPE for meetings rather than travel - Yes, it is important to meet with people but those that already know you won’t just understand they will applaud you for taking action.

  4. Rethink your packaging - can you do better. There are loads of Biodegradable options now.

  5. Reduce your stuff. It is now time for the world to declutter. Look at what you don’t need and get rid of it. If possible donate to a sustainable cause, Salvation Army or similar.

  6. Recycle, Recycle and Recycle.

  7. Create GREEN spaces - Having plants in your indoor environment will help clean the air and improve the general mood – and of course, it will make the office look prettier. Encouraging your employees to take care of the plants will make them feel more responsible and involved.

  8. Introduce Flexible Work Policy - Giving flexible working conditions to your employees is another great step towards sustainability. For instance, working from home has considerable advantages both for employees and the environment – it will help them have a more productive workspace and it will cut down the carbon emission they would normally produce on their commute to work.

  9. Get it Online - Minimise paper waste as much as you can. This will not only help the environment but it will also save you money when using the office printer. Try and manage work activities such as reading reports, sending invitations, taking meeting notes and sending documents online.

  10. Manage Your Office’s Energy Consumption - Keeping the energy levels of your office equipment under control is useful, especially when it comes to reducing your electricity bills. Ask your team to switch off their equipment overnight and shut everything down during long weekends and holiday periods. When buying new laptops and technology equipment for the office, make sure to do some research beforehand and choose the best energy efficient items within your price range. Once your equipment is out of use, recycle it to minimise landfill.

  11. Start being proud of your efforts to be sustainable share any actions on your social media pages or send them to hello@tonycuttingdigital.co.nz and I will share these ideas and promote your business on Wellington Today.
