Nestled in the heart of Wellington, Boulcott Street Bistro has established itself as a true culinary gem. Since 1991, this esteemed establishment has been captivating the senses of discerning diners with its innovative, modern fare, timeless bistro classics, and unwavering commitment to warm hospitality.

A rare Wellington example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, with picturesque turrets, steep gables, and decorative barge boards. In 1983 the house was moved forward to build behind it.

The house is associated with several notable Wellington families, in particular John Plimmer ‘the father of Wellington’. Plimmer’s grandson bought the house in 1911 and it stayed in the family until 1960 when it was sold and used as a home, office, and wool store.

Since 1971 it has housed various restaurants with the Boulcott Street Bistro being there since 1991.

A Culinary Symphony for Every Palate

Margaret Brooker wrote in Stuff magazine, 05:00, Oct 26 2011

"The first lunch was a complete disaster," recalls owner and founder John Lawrence. "We'd finished painting the midnight before. People were in the door by 11.30. We hadn't even finished setting up the tables."

Lawrence and Chris Green took on the lease of the historic Plimmer House in Boulcott St in 1991, renovating it in secret as they couldn't afford to wait for approval from the Historic Places Trust. It was shut for six months and there was a lot of interest.

"The place was packed. We were flying by the seat of our pants. None of the staff knew the menu. We were so busy the kitchen couldn't cope."

The menu at Boulcott Street Bistro is a symphony of flavors, showcasing the chef's creativity and passion for using the freshest seasonal ingredients. Whether you're a culinary adventurer drawn to modern masterpieces bursting with vibrant flavors or a comfort food enthusiast who cherishes the timeless classics, Boulcott Street Bistro has something to tantalize your palate.

Dining Experiences that Exceed Expectations

The accolades for Boulcott Street Bistro are well-deserved.

From a recent 4.6 star Google Review:

"We had one evening in Wellington and we were fortunate enough to eat at the Boulcott Street Bistro. Our waitress, Audrey, was one of the best we've had eating in restaurants on four continents. Audrey had an infectious lovely attitude and made a brilliant wine recommendation from her home town of Martinborough. We started with the octopus as our entree, then my wife had the Lamb Shank and I had the Duck Confit. The food was excellent! Our only regret is that the Bistro isn't closer to home so we can enjoy it more often than this one trip."
